SENIOR FUN IN JULY

Activities offer fun and learning for 55+ residents

The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department invites area seniors (55+) to participate in upcoming activities at six locations. All programs and facilities are open to the public.

 

Potluck and Bingo

Monthly senior potlucks are a fun way to make new friends in the community. Please bring along a side dish or dessert to share, and we will provide the meat and drinks.  After lunch, enjoy a game of bingo with prizes!  Upcoming potlucks are: Tuesday, July 10 at the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Dr. (#11956); Wednesday, July 11 at the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave. (#11096); Wednesday, July 18 at the Williamson County Recreation Complex at Nolensville, 7250 Nolensville Rd. (#11910). Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and lunch begins at noon. The potlucks are free, but registration is required at www.wcparksandrec.com.

 

Senior Book Club-Enrichment Center

The book club for seniors will meet Tuesday, July 3 at 2:00 p.m. in Studio 3 at the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave. in Franklin. The book club meets monthly to discuss their book of the month. This activity is free for all pass holders, and $1 general admission for the public. Senior Singing and Karaoke Club-Enrichment Center

If you like to sing for fun, join the fun at a new seniors (55+) singing club July 5 and the first Thursday of each month at 2:00 p.m. at the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave. in Franklin. Beginners are welcome!  The group will perform at senior events and other activities during the year. This activity is free for all pass holders, and $1 general admission for the public. Day Trips-Longview Recreation Center

The architectural tour continues July 19 with a trip to Rippavilla plantation and lunch at Delta Bound (register for #12008 before July 13).  On August 16, the group will head to North Alabama for a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Rosenbaum House, Helen Keller’s home Ivy Green,  and lunch at City Hardware in Florence (register for #12009, 8/2-8/3). Trips leave from the Longview Recreation Center in Spring Hill. The trips include transportation and tours; lunch and any other purchases are Dutch Treat.  Make your reservations at www.wcparksandrec.com.

 

Senior Garden Club-Enrichment Center

If you like to garden, join other seniors every second Monday (July 9) from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for a gardening group at the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave. in Franklin. Members will walk over to the community garden plots behind the center and learn or teach gardening skills by cultivating several plots. The group will offer its harvest for sale in the courtyard seasonally.  This activity is free for all pass holders, and $1 general admission for the public. Senior Technology Classes-Enrichment Center

Need help with how to use your iPad, iphone, android phone or Facebook? Get up to speed in these classes: iPad/iPhone Beginners, July 25 and 26, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., $36 (#12176);  Android Beginners, July 25 and 26, 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., $36 (#12179). Lunch & Learn-Enrichment Center

Learn about your health at a free lunch and learn, Monday, July 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave. This free event will provide valuable medical information. The July topic is Questions for Surgeons. Lunch will be included. Reservations are required before July 12 at www.wcparksandrec.com (#10987).  Presented by Williamson Medical Center.

 

Senior Hike-Enrichment Center

Meet at the Williamson County Enrichment Center at 110 Everbright Ave., Wednesday, July 25 at 9:00 a.m. for a trip to Long Hunter State Park. Terrain will vary. Wear hiking shoes and bring water. Please register 6/25-7/24 ($3 for transportation) at www.wcparksandrec.com (#11961).

 

Brunch and Bowl-Enrichment Center

Let’s Brunch and Bowl on the third Tuesday of each month. Seniors (55+) will meet at the Enrichment Center at Academy Park, 110 Everbright Ave. and ride to Franklin Franklin Family Entertainment Center for bowling. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy lunch at various local favorites. On July 17, the group will eat at Tupelo Honey. (Register now for #11926 at www.wcparksandrec.com.) The cost of Brunch & Bowl is $3 for transportation; Bowling and lunch are Dutch treat. Return times will vary.

 

Senior Lunch Bunch – Enrichment Center

Let’s do lunch! Jump on the bus for a fun lunch outing once a month. We will leave from the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave, at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18 for a trip to Amerigo in Brentwood. Lunch is Dutch treat, and transportation is $3 each. Space is limited to 12, so register by July 18 (#12003) at www.wcparksandrec.com.  Registration for an August 15 trip to Firebord’s in Brentwood opens July 18 (#12004).    

 

Wii Sports- Enrichment Center

Join the fun and learn bowling, tennis, or baseball the Wii games way! Meets every Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the banquet hall of the Williamson County Enrichment Center at Academy Park, 110 Everbright Ave.  No experience is necessary to play these video simulation games.  Free with pass, or $1 per senior.

 

Senior Line Dancing for Fitness-Enrichment Center

Calling all dancers! Senior line dancing is now offered as a fitness class! Meets Tuesdays Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Dr.

 

Bocce Ball Clinics

Registration opens July 9 for a senior (55+) Bocce Ball clinic at the Williamson County Enrichment Center. Learn the basics in this free two-hour clinic, August 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. All equipment is provided. Register in advance at www.wcparksandrec.com, activity #12028.

 

Senior Open Art Studio-Enrichment Center

Express yourself during this ongoing senior open art studio time. Bring your own art supplies and projects every Monday from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave. Instructor Pam Irvin will be on hand to teach new techniques and help you hone in on your artistic skills. No registration is required for this drop-in class. The class fee is $2 for Enrichment Center pass holders and $4 for others. Open to the public, 55+. 

 

Open Watercolor Studio-Enrichment Center

Bring your own supplies and ideas to this watercolor studio. Instructor Pam Irvin will guide you in learning watercolor techniques. Meets ongoing Fridays, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave.  No registration is required. The class fee is $2 for Enrichment Center pass holders and $4 for others. Open to the public, 55+. 

 

Senior Games-Nolensville

Join the fun with other seniors every Thursday from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Williamson County Recreation Complex at Nolensville, 7250 Nolensville Rd.  Play cards or games, knit or just chat in the senior activities room. No registration is needed. This is a free activity. Just drop in and meet other area seniors!

 

Dulcimer Dandies-Enrichment Center

Whether you are a novice or experienced dulcimer player, you will enjoy practicing and playing with this group of seniors (55+).  Dulcimer Dandies meet every first, fourth and fifth Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave. The group performs together at local events throughout the year. No registration or fee. Just drop in and join the fun.

 

Senior Games at Enrichment Center

The new Enrichment Center at Academy Park, 110 Everbright Ave. in Franklin has a number of ongoing games and activities in the Senior Lounge. All seniors (55+) are welcome to drop in to enjoy the lounge or any of the games. General admission is $1 or free with a department pass.  Regularly scheduled activities include: bridge, dominoes, bunco, mah jong, Scrabble, euchre, pennies from heaven, pinochle, and rummikub.  

 

Senior Bowling Group-Franklin

The Franklin Family Entertainment Center hosts a discounted bowling time for seniors on Mondays and Fridays starting at 9:00 a.m.  No experience is necessary and there are no set teams or leagues.  Games are $1.50 each and most people bowl up to 3 games.  This is a great way to bowl for fun and meet new friends.

 

Senior Group Fitness & Aqua Fitness

A number of exercise programs for seniors are offered by Williamson County Parks and Recreation at the recreation centers in Franklin, Brentwood, Nolensville, Spring Hill and Fairview, as well as at the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave. in Franklin. Classes vary at each location, and may include Aerobic Fit, yoga (beginner, strength and advanced), SilverSneakers® Classic, circuit training, Zumba Gold, indoor cycling, water aerobics and more. Senior Volunteer Group

If you are age 55 or older and looking to get more involved in the community, join the Williamson County Parks and Recreation senior volunteer group. Pickleball

If you are looking for a new way to be more active, try Pickleball, a relatively new game popular with many seniors. Pickleball is a cross between badminton, tennis and ping pong, and it’s lots of fun. Open Pickleball (indoor) for beginners is offered at the Longview Recreation Center, Franklin Recreation Complex and the recreation centers in Fairview and Nolensville. Beginner clinics will be offered July 10-19 (#12487) and July 30-August 8 (#12488). An Intermediate Level 3 clinic will be offered July 24-August 2 (#11964). Fall mixed doubles leagues (start mid-August) will be offered in mornings (#12174) or evenings (#12173). Sports for Seniors at Academy Park Gym

The Academy Park Gym, located at 120 Everbright Ave. offers a free walking club for seniors (55+), Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Summer ongoing activities: Indoor pickleball Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at noon.  The admission fee for gym use is $1 for seniors, or free with any WCPR pass.
