Great Americana BBQ Festival: Presenting friendly, and tasty, competition

It’s considered a competition, but for many teams squaring off against each other in Saturday’s Great Americana BBQ Festival at the Park at Harlinsdale Farm in Franklin, the event also presents an ideal opportunity for just getting together with other barbecue enthusiasts.

Call it bonding over Boston butts.

“The camaraderie we enjoy is the biggest part of it,” said Stan Marks, co-pitmaster for Jake’s Barbecue, a Franklin-based team competing in the Pro Division of the Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned event. “But we like the competition as well. If you want to find out if you’re any good at this, you’ve got to compete.”

The festival will feature a total of 60 teams, half in the Pro Division and the other 30 in the Backyard Teams division, competing across multiple categories for a total of $10,000 in prize money.  Festivalgoers will be able to participate in the judging by selecting the “People’s Champion,” and the official winner of the Pro Division will go on to compete in the Jack Daniel’s Barbecue competition in Lynchburg, Tenn., in October.
