Free Lecture by acclaimed art historian Max Anderson on March 22 at the Frist

Acclaimed art historian and author Dr. Maxwell L. Anderson presents free lecture on the state of public and private collecting of antiquities

Italian Ambassador Armando Varrichio to give opening remarks

The exhibition Rome: City and Empire offers visitors insight into the objects used in worship, commemoration, and decoration in the Roman Empire. In this free lecture titled Modern Challenges in Ancient Art, Dr. Maxwell L. Anderson, author of Antiquities: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford University Press, 2016), will summarize multiple perspectives about the issues facing us today in protecting ancient heritage, including the care and supervision of excavations and museum collections, the international treaties and laws governing the circulation of objects from antiquity, and the state of the art trade and public and private collecting.

Dr. Anderson’s background in the field of antiquities includes roles as curator in the Department of Greek and Roman Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, teaching positions in the field of Roman art history at the University of Rome II, Princeton University, Emory University, and nearly three decades as an art museum director.

His Excellency Armando Varricchio, Ambassador of Italy to the United States, will give opening remarks.

This lecture is supported in part by Vanderbilt University’s Department of History of Art and Department of Classical and Mediterranean Studies.
