Frist Summer Art Camp
Calling all young budding artists—discover a world of inspiration and creativity at Summer Art Camp! Our weeklong, age-appropriate classes are designed to encourage artistic expression, art appreciation, understanding, and imagination for kids ages 5 to 18. Camp sessions are directly supervised by one of our experienced museum educators. Explore Frist Center exhibitions, interact with original works of art, and try out fun new art processes. No previous art-making experience necessary!

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
AGES 5–7
Sculpture Mania!
Delve into three-dimensional art. Participants will experiment with sculpting techniques and tools to assemble, carve, craft, and model a variety of sculpted art. Inspired by contemporary sculptors and their work, participants will make maquettes, model figures, and construct kinetic sculpture using clay, fabric, found objects, and more.
Stories Come Alive
Make art and bring your ideas to life. Inspired by the exhibition Watch Me Move: The Animation Show, campers will use drawing, clay sculpting, and mixed media materials to craft unique characters and invent stories. Campers will explore a variety of storytelling methods, including using teamwork to create a Claymation movie.
Art Smarts
Investigate the language of art. Campers will learn the vocabulary of art while exploring a variety of art materials and processes, including sculpture, printmaking, collage, painting, and more. Learn about composition, balance, line, and symmetry while making art!
Warbley, Wobbly Wonders
Explore the magical world of Surrealism. Inspired by the exhibition Real/Surreal, campers will use materials including oil pastels, paint, and clay to test techniques of abstraction and color theory. Projects will include found object fantasy characters, Salvador Dali-inspired melting clocks, and dream drawings.
AGES 8–10
How Surreal!
Translate your dreams into reality using visual art. Inspired by the exhibition Real/Surreal, participants will use a variety of art techniques, including painting, printmaking, and sculpture to discover the differences between Realism and Surrealism. Spark your imagination and spirit of invention.
Elemental Explorations
Art tells stories. Campers will investigate the building blocks of art including line, color, shape, texture, and value and use the elements of design to fashion narratives through drawing, painting, and animation techniques. Discover how to use the elements of art to communicate your artistic vision!
Drawing FUNdamentals
Investigate the wonderful world of drawing. Study a variety of drawing techniques by creating artworks ranging from still-lifes to self-portraits using line, shadow, form, and space. Participants will test different tools and materials including Japanese ink drawings, charcoal, pastels, pen and ink, and more.
Make it Move! Experiment with moving art. Inspired by the exhibition Watch Me Move: The Animation Show, young artists will learn the basics of animation and experiment with different types of sequential art, including comic books, stop motion animation, Claymation, and more.
AGES 11–13
Animation 101
Be inspired by the history of animation! Building on the exhibition Watch Me Move: The Animation Show, campers will generate artworks that explore visual phenomena and the illusion of perceived motion. Participants will test a variety of media dedicated to the moving image, including iPad applications, Claymation, flipbooks and stop action animation. Use materials ranging from charcoal, cut paper, found objects, and more to design your moving masterpieces!
AGES 14-18
Nashville Art Works: Career Exploration in the Cultural Arts
Interested in a career in the arts? This workshop offers teens ages 14–18 an opportunity to explore various careers in cultural non-profit organizations. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the Nashville Symphony, along with the Center for Non-Profit Management, present this rare opportunity to gain career experience through hands-on activities and experiential learning. Professionals from each organization mentor students in this project-based and fast paced weeklong event.
ARTlab: Moving Pictures
Drawing inspiration from Watch Me Move: The Animation Show, young artists will immerse themselves in a fantastical world of creative possibilities. Participants will investigate how animation has been used to shape and reflect our culture and will create unique characters to express their inner narrative. Construct exciting projects using a variety of techniques and materials including storyboarding, in-depth character design, iPad applications, mixed media experiments, and stop motion animation.

IMPORTANT CAMP INFORMATION:
Enrollment in Summer Art Camp is limited and programs fill early. Register early to reserve a spot in your preferred camp session.
Registration:
• Summer Art Camp registration opens for members on January 27, 2014, and for non-members on February 10, 2014. Registration will be recorded on a first-come, first-served basis using the date and time the registration form is received.
• Camps are designed to meet the needs of specific age ranges and developmental abilities. Campers must be the proper age before the first day of camp.
• A confirmation letter will be sent after successful registration. If you do not receive a confirmation letter within three weeks after sending in registration form, please contact the Assistant Youth and Family Educator Quinton Creasy at 615.744.4912.
• Balances must be paid in full no later than two weeks prior to the start date of your session. If payment is not received by this date, registration will be forfeited.
• Programs and dates are subject to change. The Frist Center reserves the right to cancel programs when necessary. Fees will be refunded under this circumstance.
Ages 5–10 Daily Schedule:
• Morning sessions begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. Please bring your child to the Demonbreun entrance no later than 8:50 a.m. Afternoon sessions begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. Please bring your child to the Demonbreun Street entrance no later than 12:50 p.m.
• Morning sessions end at noon. Afternoon sessions end at 4:00 p.m. Parents should pick up their child no later than five minutes after camp ends.
• A $2.00 dollar per minute late fee will be assessed for children picked up late, unless the camper is enrolled in another session or after-care.
• All Summer Art Camp related parking will be validated for free. Please park in the Frist Center’s Visitor parking lot. Participants will be issued a ticket to validate free parking.
Ages 11–13 Daily Schedule:
• Camp begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. Please bring your child to the Demonbreun Street entrance no later than 8:50 a.m.
• Camp ends at 4:00 p.m. Parents should pick up their child no later than five minutes after camp ends.
• A $2.00 dollar per minute late fee will be assessed for children picked up late, unless the camper is enrolled in another session or after-care.
• All Summer Art Camp related parking will be validated for free. Please park in the Frist Center’s Visitor parking lot. Participants will be issued a ticket to validate free parking.
Ages 14–18 Daily Schedule:
• Camp begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. Campers must be at the Demonbreun Street entrance no later than 9:50 a.m.
• If your child will be absent from camp, a parent or guardian must call to excuse the absence. All unexcused absences will be verified with parent or guardian.
• All Summer Art Camp related parking will be validated for free. Please park in the Frist Center’s Visitor parking lot. Participants will be issued a ticket to validate free parking.
Weekly Summer Art Camp Exhibition:
• Campers exhibit their artwork at the Frist Center: each camp session closes with a weekly art show on Friday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.
• Campers’ artwork remains at camp until the weekly art show. If your child will not attend the weekly art show, please let the instructor know so the child’s entire portfolio of artwork can be sent home.
Dress Code:
• Dress for mess.
• Closed-toed shoes are required for safety: no flip flops or sandals.
• The art studios can get chilly with air conditioning in the summer: please send a sweatshirt or sweater if this is a problem.
Lunches & Snacks:
• There will be a snack time during each camp session for 5–10 year old campers. Please pack a small, non-refrigerated snack clearly labeled with your child’s full name.
• Water will be provided for participants during their camp session snack.
• Children enrolled in the daylong program (two sessions) or the 11–13 year old and 14–18 year old camp sessions must bring their own lunches. Please pack a lunch that does not require microwaving or refrigeration.
• Supervised lunch will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. for the 5–10 year old camps, and from 12:30–1:00 p.m. for 11–13 year old and 14–18 year old camp sessions.
• All Summer Art Camp participants must remain inside the Frist Center during lunch unless signed out by a parent or guardian.
Pre & After Summer Art Camp Program:
• For campers ages 5–13: pre-camp care is offered 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and after-camp care is offered 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. for an additional $25 per session for each child.
• Enrollment in combined pre-camp and after-camp care is $45 per week for each child. Space is limited.
• Single day requests are available: please contact Assistant Youth and Family Educator Quinton Creasy at 615.744.4912 to purchase single day pre- or after-camp sessions.
• A $2.00 dollar per minute late fee will be assessed per child for campers picked up from after-care after 5:30 p.m.
