INDOOR CYCLING PROGRAM EXPANDS

Fun and good results fuel class demand

Indoor cycling is growing in popularity with over 41 million Americans now taking part in indoor or stationary cycling group classes. Studio classes across the country are in high demand, and Williamson County Parks and Recreation (WCPR) is responding by expanding the number of indoor cycling classes to 50 per week at multiple locations.  In July 2018, a total of 1,754 participants took indoor cycling classes at these locations: Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Rd.; the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Dr.; the Fairview Recreation Complex, 2714 Fairview Blvd.; and the Williamson County Recreation Complex at Nolensville, 7250 Nolensville Rd.

Bob Vogelpohl, group fitness coordinator for WCPR, says people like indoor cycling for several reasons. “First and foremost,” he reports, “cycling gets results. It is a low-impact cardio form of exercise that can burn 350 to 600 calories in 45 minutes, depending on class intensity.”  Secondly, Vogelpohl says, it’s fun, and anyone can do it. “Road biking on city streets can be intimidating, but with indoor cycling, there is no need for a helmet or dealing with busy traffic.”

Williamson County Parks and Recreation offers classes of varying intensities, classes specifically for seniors, and aqua cycling. Aqua cycling, says Vogelpohl, places stationary bikes in the water where there is less pressure on the joints.  “Many people find the aqua cycling classes to be a soothing, less intense form of exercise,” he states.

As part of the group fitness options offered by Williamson County Parks and Recreation, indoor cycling and aqua cycling classes are included in any premium pass.  General admission is $4 for youth (14-17) and seniors (55+), and $8 for adults.  For class information, go to the group fitness schedules for specific facilities at www.wcparksandrec.com.
