Battle Ground Academy’s Mary Hannah Winstead and Brentwood High School’s Austin Sanders have been named this month’s winners of the John Maher Scholar Athlete of the Month Award.

Mary Hannah Winstead

Winstead, daughter of Kurt and Beth Winstead, is a five-sport athlete for the Lady Wildcats, compiling 16 varsity letters by the end of her junior year.

BGA girls basketball coach Grover Levy calls Winstead a “throwback type of athlete” for her wide range of athletic ability. She is a four-year letter winner in girls soccer while being a three-year letter winner in basketball, track, golf, and trap shooting.

“She is a leader in all of her endeavors,” Levy said. “As impressive as her credentials are, the thing that most impresses me is her encouraging spirit. She truly makes those around her better, which to me is a sign of a great leader.”

On the basketball court, Winstead was named the team’s Most Valuable player as a junior and Offensive MVP as a sophomore. Recently, she was named MVP of the BGA Christmas Invitational and was also an All Star selection in the Best of Tennessee Exposure Tournament. Click here to continue reading.
