New Teen & Adult Art Classes

The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department announces eight new adult art classes at the Franklin Recreation Complex, 1120 Hillsboro Road.
SENIOR PORTFOLIO PREPARATION
High school art students can learn how to prepare their portfolio for college submissions in this three-part class. Instructor and local artist Emily Martinez will teach each four-week segment. Segment one covers art schools and submission guidelines, covering each specific schools requirements and evaluating current student portfolios for adequacy and compliance. Segment one of Senior Portfolio Preparation is Thursdays, January 7-28 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Future segments are: Keys to  Preparing Portfolios-February 4-25; and Rounding out your Portfolio-March 4-25. BEGINNING SEWING
Learn the basics of sewing using a machine: how to sew a straight line, press seams, gathering, French seams, knit fabrics, lace insertion, zipper insertion and more. Participants will make a small zippered bag while learning these skills. Bring basic supplies: scissors, measuring tape, seam ripper. Sewing machines are available and may be reserved by calling Cindy Moore at 790-5719, ext. 20. Class meets Monday, January 11 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Class fee: $15, plus a supply fee of $4 payable to instructor (fabric and other supplies included).  To register, call the Franklin Recreation Complex, 790-5719, ext. 10.
QUILTING BY MACHINE
Learn to create a basic lap quilt using a sewing machine. Learn how to pick out colors and cut out the quilt, then proceed to machine piecing, batting, binding, mitering corners and machine quilting. Sewing machines are available and may be reserved by calling Cindy Moore at 790-5719, ext. 20. The four-week class meets Tuesdays, January 12-February 2 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Course fee: $75. CREATING IN COLORED PENCIL
Melanie Jackson teaches this drawing class where participants will use colored pencils – one of the most consistent tools of expression. Colored pencils are versatile, portable and non-toxic. Designed for beginners to experienced artists. Each student will produce a simple vibrant colored pencil landscape. Call instructor for supply list: 595-9460. CREATIVE PAINTING WITH DORIT RILEY
Explore a different side of yourself in this new art class taught by local artist Dorit Riley. Anyone can learn Riley’s method of choosing everyday subjects and taking them to a different and far more interesting dimension. Each class has a new specific project with directions and help from the artist provided. Creative Painting will meet on Wednesdays, January 13-February 3. Choose a morning class from 9:30 a.m. to noon or a night class from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The four-week course is $75, plus a $10 supply fee payable to the instructor. OPEN STAINED GLASS STUDIO
Experienced stained glass students can use open studio time to work on various projects using their own designs and glass. Instructor Julie Westall (www.sapphireroad.com) provides tools, equipment, copper foil, solder, chemicals and assistance. Open Stained Glass Studio meets Thursdays, January 21-February 18. JEWELRY MAKING WITH GLASS
Learn the basic principles of glass fusing while creating beautiful glass art jewelry. For all skill levels. Using colorful and highly reflective dichroic glass, employ various jewelry making components and techniques to create a one-of-a kind piece. This one day workshop will be Saturday, January 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The class fee is $50, plus a supply fee of $20 payable to the instructor. PILLOWS WITH DECORATIVE TRIM
Learn to make pillows from scratch using fabrics of your choice. Learn to make piping and how to create a pillow with a professional, custom look.
