One Generation Away feeds more than 400 families

Franklin nonprofit One Generation Away donated more than 400 turkeys to families in Williamson County on Saturday after raising $7,000. The turkeys, and 25,000 pounds of other food, helped feed more than 400 families and a total of 1,550 people.

According to the organization’s website, the goal of One Gen Away is to eliminate racism, denominationalism, and poverty in America within one generation. Founder Chris Whitney attended a Franklin Special School District school board meeting earlier this month in an attempt to spread awareness about One Gen Away.

“We work with counselors in the schools since they’re the closest ones to the kids,” Whitney said. “They know the greatest need in the community as far as families that are in desperate need of food. That was the reason for going to them and making them aware of who we are and that if they’ve got a child that’s hungry after school or on a weekend, we can get food to them right away.”

Whitney has also worked with other numerous community groups and said that he wants to others to know about his organization as an extra resource in the community.

So far One Gen Away has had numerous food distributions in Williamson and Davidson counties with the next scheduled for December in Nashville and another in Franklin in January. Whitney said that the organization is still making boxes of food for those in need and will continue to do so for the winter holidays as well.
