Home is where the heart is: WAKM’s Tom Lawrence feels tug to return to China, but home for now

By Mindy Tate, Editor

The first month Tom Lawrence — WAKM general manager dubbed the “Voice of Williamson County” by many — spent in China as an English teacher, he admits he was homesick.

Now home six months early due to health concerns, he finds the same feeling for the people of China, whom he said are much like Williamson Countians.

“I don’t miss China. I miss the Chinese people,” said Lawrence, who knows he will return to Wuhan University, located in a city of the same name which is the capital of the Hubei province in central China at some point in the future.

“You cannot appreciate China until you see it,” he said. “Whatever Americans have been told about China, about 90 percent is not true. They are just like Williamson Countians, except they have nothing and they are a very happy people. We have everything and we are not.

Northup receives high honors as Master Sales Guide at Land Rover Nashville
By Carole Robinson, staff writer

She may be a grandmother and a great grandmother, but she is not the typical gray-haired, rocking chair granny one often thinks of as a great grandmother. Brentwood’s Carolyn Northup is active, energetic and a “get ‘er done” kind of grandma. That spirit is one of the secrets to her recent success at being named one of only 100 Land Rover Master Sales Guides in the United States and the only one in Tennessee.

In a career dominated by men, Carolyn Northup is the only woman on the sales staff, but she has not only managed to fit in, she has managed to excel at Land Rover Nashville on Cadillac Drive in Brentwood.

Raptors capture district crown, Indy ladies fall short

By Marcus Stone, Staff Writer

After such a highly competitive regular season, it is fitting that the District 11-AAA basketball title was decided in overtime as the Ravenwood Raptors defeated the Franklin Rebels 70-65 Tuesday night.

Raptors guard Evan Forhetz led the Ravenwood charge in the extra session with eight of his game-high 22 points, including back-to-back three pointers that gave his team the lead for good.

“He’s just a big time player,” Ravenwood Coach Patrick Whitlock said of the junior. “He stepped up and made big shots. He’s the kind of kid that lays in bed at night thinking about those plays.”

The game was in serious doubt for Ravenwood (19-13) after Franklin outscored them 22-7 in a second quarter that concluded with the Raptors trailing 36-24 going into the break. The team was resurgent in the third, storming to a 21-10 run that got them within one point going into the fourth.
