Sunset Concert Series

Music on the lawn is a Carnton Plantation tradition.

But this year, a different kind of music will join the pop offerings patrons hear at the Sunday Sunset Concert Series. Each Saturday in June, July and August, the Nashville Old Time String Band will perform period music for tourists on the porch at Carnton.

“Old Time music came to America primarily from the U.K. and Europe and merged with African-American influences from instruments like the banjo,” said Ron Whitlow, NOTSBA president.

Often recognized as mountain or home grown folk music, “this is music that gets your foot ‘a-tappin’,” said Margie Thessin, Carnton’s interim Executive Director. “You might not know the names of these songs, but you will recognize many of the tunes.”

Between four and six musicians from the group will play acoustic guitar, open back banjo, fiddles, mandolins and acoustic base each Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There is no additional charge over Carnton’s regular admission.

So c’mon out to hear some of the music the McGavocks would have listened and danced to!

Carnton is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 1:00-5:00 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $12 adults, $10 seniors 65+ and $5 children 6-12.
