Twilight

Last night I went on a quest to find a copy of Twilight available to rent. After scouring (albeit Internet scouring) all the Redboxes between and around Franklin and Nashville, I finally found one.

I didn’t notice all the “hype” around Twilght until the movie had already left the big screen and people were left reaching out for more, in the good ole fashioned book form. There are 12 year olds that read the Twilight book series and 35 year olds that read them. The books by Stephanie Meyer have a cult of followers, a following that is somewhat similar to the Harry Potter obsession. The movie was obviously popular and the DVD release was anxiously awaited by many…you can always tell the “important” movies because they are never released with the others on Tuesdays.

So, I had to check out the movie. Although I love to read, watching a 2 hour film requires less commitment. I finally recovered a copy of Twilight, watched it and it was pretty good. Well, I can see how it appeals to people. Everyone likes an unrealistic, forbidden love story and that is exactly the relationship between Bella Swan (the human) and Edward Cullen (the vampire).

I enjoyed the scenes with the Cullens, the vampire “family”, trying to do normal things such as cook dinner and play baseball. The movies left me wanting more of these scenes. There honestly could be an entire movie plot about the Cullens trying to live among humans, think “Coneheads” or “Elf”. One thing I don’t recall is if any of the main characters ever laughed during in the movie or seemed remotely happy…like the weather they are dreary.

Overall, the movie was entertaining, kept my attention for a couple hours and satiated my curiosity for what the “hype” was. And it does leave a good cliffhanger at the end to leave you waiting…or grabbing the second book by Stephanie Meyer, New Moon.
