UPCOMING DAY TRIPS FOR AREA SENIORS

The Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department invites area seniors (55+) to participate in upcoming day trips visiting local and regional attractions. All activities are open to the public.

Salsa & Spirits Tour

Back on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail, a visit to Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery is planned for January 18, 2019. Charles Nelson was distilling whiskey before the Civil War and had established a great business in Nashville before prohibition closed the distillery. 100 years later his three great grandsons revived the family business. The distillery tour includes a tasting. The excursion will be combined with lunch at Taco Mamacita, fresh-mex at its finest.

The cost of the trip is $18. Lunch is Dutch treat. The group will depart the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Drive, Spring Hill at 10:15 a.m. and return at 2:45 p.m. Register online at www.wcparksandrec.com. Registration code #13328.

State Capitol Building and Tennessee State Museum

Area seniors are invited to join us for a guided tour of the Tennessee State Capitol Building on Thursday, January 24, 2019. The Capitol Building stands today much as it did when it first opened in 1859 and is one of the oldest working Capitol Buildings in the United States and home to the Tennessee General Assembly and the Governor’s Office. The grounds also hold statues of historic figures such as Alvin York, Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson, and Sam Davis. The tombs of President James K. Polk and his wife are also located on Capitol Grounds.

After the guided tour of the Capitol, participants will visit the brand new Tennessee State Museum located on the northwest corner of the Bicentennial Mall. The new facility, with 137,000 feet of exhibit/gallery space, opened on October 4, 2018 with a budget upwards of $120 million.

Lunch (Dutch treat) at 312 Pizza Company will follow the tours. The cost of the trip is $26 and covers the tour fees and transportation.

Transportation for the trip is available to/from two locations: the Williamson County Enrichment Center, 110 Everbright Ave, Franklin, and the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Dr, Spring Hill. The group will depart the Enrichment Center in Franklin at 9:15 a.m. and return at 3:30 p.m., or the Longview Recreation Center for an 8:45 a.m. departure with a 4:00 p.m. return time. Registration is required for this trip. Online Registration Code is #13485 at www.wcparksandrec.com.
