Vintage Base Ball knocks it out of the park bringing together history, community

The jewel of Brentwood, Ravenswood Mansion at Marcella Vivrette Smith Park, was open on Sunday, April 24 to the community for tours. Lines began forming before the mansion opened at 2 p.m. as community members gathered anxious to peek inside the restored home.

Members of the Historical Commission, City of Brentwood leadership and other volunteers acted as docents offering valuable information about the home, and Smith Park. Guests were able to see first-hand all the improvements made to the home, grounds and what the future holds for the park.

Adding to the excitement of the day was the opportunity to watch Vintage Base Ball at its finest. Brentwood’s very own team, the Travellers came out victorious over the Stewart’s Creek Scouts.

Each member of the Travellers Club of Brentwood were assigned a team name as follows: Ray “Old School” Ball; David “The Skipper” Carroll; Robert “Curly” Carson; Brigid “Ginger” Day; Andy “The Professor” Finch (Captain); Deb “Bloomer” Finch; Eric “Flash” Fulton; Richard “Philly” Jurosky; George “Woodchips” Kittos; Greg “Tex” Lewis; Tavis “Splinter” McCourt; Rob “Big Sky” Montano; Jeff “Spartan” Wolfgang and Justin “Chowdahead” Zolot.

Two games were held and competition was fierce. Following the 19th century rules, equipment, costumes and culture of the 1860s it was apparent how much the participants and followers of the sport enjoy the game.
