Upcoming classes and camps for all ages

Summer will be a blast at the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Dr., with fun camps and classes like basketball, science, dance, Healthy Hands Cooking, Babysitting, You and Me Paint Night, Mindful Eating, Judo/Karate and Polynesian Dance. All activities are open to the public.

 

Science Camps

Weird and wacky science experiments for kids! Each class includes a variety of hands-on experiments to get kids excited about science. Dance Camps

The Rhythm and Spirit dance, tumbling and cheer program presents ten camps at the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Dr.:  Ballerina Prep, July 9-12 or July 16-19 (age 3); My Doll & Me Princess Dance, July 9-12 for age 4 or age 5-6; Broadway Dance, July 9-12 (7-15 yrs.); Turns, Leaps & Splits, July 16-19 (7-15 yrs.); Trolls Dance, July 16-19, age 4 or ages 5-6; Beginner Sampler, July 23-26 (7-15 yrs.); Intermediate Sampler, July 23-26 (7-15 yrs.).  Register at www.wcparksandrec.com

 

Basketball

Sharpen your game in this summer basketball camp for boys and girls, ages 7-13. Meets July 9-13, 9:00 a.m. to noon daily at the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Dr. Register on line at www.wcparksandrec.com. $65 per child.

 

You & Me Paint Night

A fun night of art for kids (5-12 yrs.) and their parents or grandparents to create together! You and Me Paint Night is July 12 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Dr. Register on line at www.wcparksandrec.com, #11777. $20 per pair.

 

Healthy Hands Cooking

This eight-hour camp educates children on the critical skills of nutrition and healthy cooking. Meets Monday-Thursday, 1:00 p.m. -3:00 p.m. at the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Dr. July 16-19 (ages 9-13 yrs., #11807).  $120. Mindful Eating

In this two-part workshop, adults learn the ABCs of mindful eating. Learn the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger. Each session will have a 30-minute gentle “mindful” yoga session followed by a short guided meditation. Meets Tuesdays, July 24 and 31 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Dr. $50 per person. Safe Kids 101

Kids think they are ready to stay home alone and parents wonder if it’s okay to let them. This home alone class will help your 9-13 year old take the next step in independence while giving you peace of mind. Topics include: responsibilities when staying home alone, simple first aid and abdominal thrusts for choking victims, how to navigate the online world, fire safety and what to do around an aggressive dog. Also, the truth behind abuse, abduction and stranger danger. Judo/Karate

This combination class of Judo and Karate gives students (8 years and older) a well-rounded program of physical fitness and self-confidence. Students can progress through black belt and have the opportunity to compete in tournaments.  Meets Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. at the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill. Polynesian Dance

Learn to dance like the natives of Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand and Tahiti. Instructor Chris Hendrickson uses these dance representations as a form of both exercise and education.  Three  levels meet on Wednesdays at the Longview Recreation Center at Spring Hill, 2909 Commonwealth Dr.: Beginners, 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.; Intermediates, 6:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.; Advanced, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  This course is $25 per month, and registration is available on line at www.wcparksandrec.com. All ages are welcome.
